The Warriors appear to be in good shape at the start of the season. Steve Kerr’s side signed their fifth victory in their five preseason games after beating the Portland Trail Blazers 119-97, closing the tour of preparation undefeated and with reason for optimism. And if anyone saw to it that it was, it was Stephen Curry.
The point guard issued a warning to the league that he is reaching the 21-22 season with the desire to continue at the high level at which he closed the past. In just three quarters (he did not play in the last one), Steph went up to 41 points, leading his team in flying colors based on great actions and three-pointers from the house. 7 of his 14 attempts from the perimeter ended up on the scoreboard, and, although it is true that these types of games are not much use and it is not advisable to overreact, Curry’s extraordinary performance will put more than one on notice.
Jordan Poole, with 16 goals, was his best companion, while Nemanja Bjelica and Draymond Green signed 12 and 10 points respectively. Those of San Francisco could not count on the young Jonathan Kuminga and James Wiseman, who seems that they will not reach the start of the season, in which the Warriors will face the Lakers at the Staples Center.
The Blazers, for their part, gave rest to quite a few big men, including Damian Lillard. CJ McCollum was therefore in command of his team, and responded with 26 goals in the 28 minutes available to him. Norman Powell, meanwhile, added 18, and Jusuf Nurkic finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Oregon team closes the preseason with four defeats in the four games played, although, again, it is of little use to draw definitive conclusions from these games. It will be from next Wednesday, the day they will debut in the regular league hosting the Sacramento Kings, when they can begin to evaluate the new Billups Blazers.
