NASA warns of 5 space rocks approaching the Earth’s range, while a Finnish astrophysicist proposes that humans colonize the asteroid belt itself within the next fifteen years.
NASA issued a summary, revealing that 5 asteroids, which may be between 25 and 100 meters in diameter, could approach our planet before the month ends.
On Tuesday, the 25-meter asteroid, 2021 BD3, will pass near Earth at a safe distance of 3.9 million kilometers. Shortly thereafter, an object called 2021 AL, 40 meters in diameter, will overtake a distance of 4.1 million kilometers.

By Thursday January 28, the 2021 BZ space rock will pass near our planet, at a distance of 2.1 million km. On January 29, two asteroids: 2021 AG7 (up to 100 meters in diameter) and 2021 AF7, which are 30 meters long, will pass near Earth at 4.2 million kilometers and 6.8 million kilometers, respectively.
Meanwhile, one advanced-minded astrophysicist suggests that instead of asteroids reaching us, humans should instead colonize the asteroid belt, in less than 15 years.
Dr. Pekka Janhonen, an astrophysicist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki, suggested building “massive floating satellites” fit for life, orbiting the dwarf planet Ceres, 523 million kilometers from Earth, between the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
And like something picked directly from the recent science fiction series, these disc-shaped settlements, linked to powerful magnets, will boast thousands of cylindrical structures that can hold a total of 50,000 people who will all benefit from the artificial gravity generated by the slow rotation of floating cities.
Janhonen also proposes space mining from Ceres, as a way to create an economy and make colonialism profitable and sustainable, using space elevators, to move resources and possibly return to Earth for processing.
