South Korea’s president calls on Biden to continue what Trump started with Kim

South Korean President Moon Jae-in Monday called on US President-elect Joe Biden to hold talks with the North to build on the progress President Donald Trump has made with leader Kim Jong Un.

Moon, who had offered to act as a mediator between Pyongyang and Washington, said he would take the earliest opportunity to call for North Korea to become Biden’s foreign policy priority so that he could pursue an accord Trump struck with Kim during their summit in Singapore.

“The inauguration of the Biden administration will mark a turning point for the start of dialogue between America and North Korea and dialogue between North and South again, and building on the achievements made in the Trump administration,” Moon added at a New Year press conference.

He believed that “the dialogue could gain momentum if we resume it from the Singapore statement and seek concrete measures in the negotiations.”

Kim and Trump pledged in a joint statement to establish new relations and work for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but their second summit and the talks that followed collapsed.
