The Russian tennis star gets a chance to finish second in the world

Russian Daniel Medvedev will get, early next month, another chance to finish second in the world, instead of Spain’s Rafael Nadal, if he rises to the final of the Rotterdam tennis tournament.

Medvedev ranked third in the world, the highest in his career, last Monday, after defeating Serbian Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open.

Had Medvedev beat Djokovic, Nadal would have passed to second place.

On Thursday, Nadal, who has won 20 major trophies so far, withdrew from the Rotterdam championship due to a back injury, which he missed his country’s tennis team’s matches in the ATP Cup earlier this month in Melbourne.

Nadal’s withdrawal means that Medvedev will be the number one in the Rotterdam tournament, which will be held between the first and the seventh of next March, in which the prominent Greek players, Stefanos Tseppas, and Germany, Alexander Zverev, will also participate.

If Medvedev reaches the final of the tournament, he will be the first player to occupy the first two places in the world, along with Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray since Australian Lytton Hewitt did it in 2005.
