Michael Porter Jr. and the Denver Nuggets are negotiating a contract extension. This was announced by the player himself, who has revealed in an interview with Michael Singer, a journalist from the Denver Post, that the talks are already taking place and that they are progressing quite satisfactorily.
“At the moment everything sounds very good and it is going in the direction we want. There is nothing set in stone, but for now no problem has arisen ”assured the forward. “It could probably be closed by now, but I’ve told my agent I’m not in a rush and to take your time. It is not something that distresses me. For now I am in the gym training, and when there is news he will tell me ”.
Franchise and player have until the day the season begins, that is, until October 19, to reach an agreement. If this does not happen, Porter will go out to free agency in 2022, although he will do so as a restricted free agent. Therefore, Denver still has room in case the negotiations do not go as they would like, but it would certainly be more practical to leave the forward tied this very offseason.
It is a bit strange to see Porter negotiate a contract extension already, because, since he missed his entire first season, it is difficult to have the perception that he was chosen in the draft three years ago. The Nuggets debuted in the NBA in the 19-20 season, in which he showed flashes of his offensive talent to exploit more consistently in the 20-21, in which his 19 points per game made him one of the indisputable references of the Malone team. While he still has some concepts to polish, his quality is unquestionable, and Denver would do well to resolve his situation in a mutually agreeable way.
However, the Coloradans have a lot of work to do in that regard, since they are currently also negotiating with Aaron Gordon, so they will have to measure well how much money they leave committed.
