The president counselor of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, warned that the electoral reform discussed and endorsed in the Congress of the Union was behind the backs of the citizens.

“It is not for democrats to legislate with their backs turned to the citizenry, to majority instead of seeking consensus and approving visions that clearly violate the autonomy of the INE, seriously affect the ability of the institute to guarantee authentic elections and put at risk the essential principles of the electoral function “, said.

He described as serious that in the process of approving the so-called electoral “plan b” of the federal government, that legislative majority of Morena has resorted to disqualifying the INE and even threatening directors and officials.

“It is also noteworthy that 22 governors of those same parties use disqualification as the only support to express their support for the reform,” he criticized.

Córdova reiterated that “there are those who want to launch the campaigns for the INE and for our democracy, they must be told to put away their shovels because there will be no burial.

“The battle for the defense of democracy and our electoral system will continue, resorting to all legal means that are necessary to enforce our Constitution, and I am sure that in this cause we will have the full support of the citizenry,” he insisted.

Voting risk

The Association of Electoral Institutions of the Federative Entities (AIEEF), which brings together the 32 Local Electoral Public Organizations (OPL) in the country, expressed their concern about the effects that the electoral reform will cause in the 2024 elections.

The association warned that the reduction in the electoral professional service of decentralized areas will impact the proper installation of the polling stations or the counting of the votes.

He informed that he will carry out a thorough diagnosis of the effects of the reform approved by Congress, and warned that if he finds affectations to the electoral principles, the pertinent legal resources will be presented.

“We express that we will carry out a technical review of each and every one of the reforms, and if any affectations are found to the constitutional principles, to the electoral political rights of the citizenry and the functionality and operability of the electoral institutions, the OPLs will present the pertinent legal resources before the corresponding instances, in order to safeguard the integrity and legality of the Electoral System”, he mentioned.

“The changes could impact the proper installation of the polling stations or the counting of the votes, which would affect the organization process for the 2024 local elections, which will be the largest and most challenging in the country’s history,” he added.

The association considered “that the main asset of the OPLs is their human resources, we declare that all necessary actions will be deployed to protect the labor rights of those who collaborate in local electoral institutes.”
