In the land of the Sinaloa Cartel, homicides have dropped 50.7%

Sinaloa, despite being the main center of operations for the Sinaloa Cartel, commanded by the sons of Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán —among them Ovidio Guzmán— and Mayo Zambada, has experienced a drop in the number of homicides in recent years, although other crimes such as theft presented an increase in 2022.

According to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), until last November, Sinaloa registered just over 28,054 investigation folders for various crimes, a figure well below entities such as Edomex, with 366,705 crimes; CDMX, with approximately 214,636 crimes; Guanajuato (129,743); Baja California (101,106) or below entities considered “non-violent” such as Querétaro, where about 53,775 crimes are recorded between January and November 2022.

In intentional homicides, Sinaloa was placed as one of the 13 entities with the lowest number of murders in said period, by counting only 440 cases. Although Culiacán entered the priority municipalities for the government by concentrating more than half of the murders that are committed in the state.

In 2019, the homicide rate was 28.62 victims per 100,000 inhabitants, while the national average was 27.43.

By 2020 the rate decreased to 24.65 cases and the national average remained at 27.05. In 2021, the rate was 18.86, against the national rate of 25.84.

Until November 2022, the incidence of murders in Sinaloa was placed at 13.72 cases, a figure below that registered in the entire country (21.88).

Crimes with increases

In this context, local authorities have detected a significant increase in at least 4 crimes during 2022 in Sinaloa, which exceed the statistics with more than 40 percent increase compared to the previous year, including robbery commerce, burglary, rape, malicious injury, and bank robbery.

Mainly business robbery, which until September 2022 had shown an increase in incidence of 48% more than in 2021. Like malicious injuries, with an increase of 12% in the same period.
