A British family decided to ban sponges from entering their home due to a rare addiction of a mother of two children who used to eat it daily for years, so that this mother during her pregnancy did not stop this strange habit, believing that she suffers from an eating disorder called “Pica” or craving for strangeness.
The owner of the incident, Claire Louise Owen, 44, and a mother of two, confirmed that she began refusing to buy the sponge for her family because she could not resist eating it, noting that she began chewing the sponge when she was fourteen years old, and she believes that she suffers from an eating disorder called pica, which makes them crave non-food items that have no nutritional value.

Claire, from Chrisith, North Wales, said: ‘I started chewing a sponge when I was about 14 or 15 years old, working in chemistry, and would like to buy a sponge so I can eat it, and I love the feeling of putting it in My mouth, tearing, chewing, and swallowing. And I think it’s the texture I like.”

Recounting her love for certain sponges, she said, “I like sponges that have smaller holes and are easily rips off. Some sponges you can’t shred, and if I have a sponge, I keep them in my bedroom drawer and take one to three bites a day.”
Briton Claires admitted that she knows her eating habits are not good for her, but she feels relieved when she finishes using a sponge.
Claire’s cravings for sponge chewing increase when she’s menstruating, stressed or tired, and was especially hard to resist when she was pregnant with her two sons, William, 11, and Sam, 10.
