The mayor of a city in the US state of Arizona declared a state of emergency due to high numbers of immigrants being disembarked by federal authorities in the small town.
Chris Riggs, the mayor of Gila Bend, said, “The border patrol informed us that it will drop the migrants who were held for 72 hours in our town, which we did not really understand because we do not have charitable organizations that can help,” stressing that “the big cities and towns should help them.” Persons.
Riggs’s announcement came one day after the US Customs and Border Protection Department landed 16 immigrants in a park in Gila Bend, a town with a population of less than 2,000 that does not have a hospital or shelter.
Riggs, the mayor, said that he and his wife used trucks to transport the new immigrants to the Welcome Center in Phoenix in order to ensure that they had a safe place to stay.
“I cannot bear the idea of young children having to walk across the desert to reach a safe place,” he said, calling on the Maricopa County government, the Arizona government and the administration of President Joe Biden to help.
The Biden administration is facing criticism for its handling of the border crisis, with tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors detained in the United States, many of them for longer than is permitted by law.
