Former US President Jimmy Carter is absent from President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, after he was the first former president to confirm plans to attend President Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017.
A spokeswoman for the Carter Center in Atlanta said that President Carter and former first lady Rosalynn had sent Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris their “best wishes,” and emphasized that they were looking forward to a “successful administration.”
It is the first time the couple has missed the ceremony since Carter was sworn in as the 39th President of the United States in 1977.
He was the first confirmed to attend Trump’s inauguration in 2017, and then sat alongside former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush. Bush Sr. was the only president at the time not to attend Trump’s inauguration.
It is noteworthy that the Carter spouses have lived in their home in the state of Georgia since they left the White House in 1981, where they spend all their time in light of the spread of the Corona virus.
