The spokesman said in a statement, Monday, that “the archbishop and all the metropolitans of the Church of Greece respect all known religions and treat all believers with Christian love and solidarity, which knows no discrimination, through all their actions and special initiatives in the social and charitable fields.”
He added, “All what the archbishop said about Islam, in the context of his recent television interview about the contribution of our church to the 1821 revolution, did not mean anything more than the distortion of the Islamic religion by the radical fundamentalists, who sow terror and death all over the world.”
The spokesman pointed out that “these are exactly the people the archbishop was referring to, people who exploit Islam and turn it into a deadly weapon against everyone who has a different opinion from them.”
Earlier, Jerome told OPEN TV about the Greek War of Independence that “Islam is not a religion,” and “Muslims always stand with war.”
He added, “Islam … is not a religion, but a political party, a political ambition.” He added that the followers of Islam “are people of war, and people of expansion, this is the peculiarity of Islam, and the teachings of Muhammad call for this,” according to him.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned this statement, stressing that the clerics should “work in the service of peace instead of sowing the seeds of discord.”
