Amazon workers at the Coventry warehouse are planning to go on strike on Black Friday, as well as for three additional days next month, due to a disagreement over pay. The GMB union has confirmed that over 1,000 workers will participate in what is expected to be the largest strike in Amazon’s history. The strike dates are November 7, 8, 9, and 24, which coincides with one of the busiest retail days of the year. Earlier this year, 600 members went on strike for three days, demanding a pay increase from £10.50 to £15 an hour. However, the US firm does not recognize the union. The strike action is seen as a response to Amazon’s failure to address their concerns. Yesterday, Amazon UK announced that it would invest £170 million in two pay raises for frontline employees over the next six months. Despite this, the GMB Union argues that the increase is not enough, and workers still face low pay, unsafe working conditions, and workplace surveillance. The Coventry warehouse is a crucial part of Amazon’s distribution network, and the strike action is expected to have a significant impact.
