Cancun, QR. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he had already met with the owners of the US firm Vulcan Materials to formalize the offer to install a cruise ship dock in Punta Venado, where the Sascabera Sactún, formerly Calica, is located in Playa del Carmen.
“We are now looking for an arrangement so that these lands, because they are 2,000 hectares, are used for tourism, that this can be restored, they are like swimming pools. And we are convincing the company and I have already spoken with the owner of the American company to guarantee that we are going to give them permits, with the permitted density, protecting the environment, because here there are areas of (…) vegetation”, the president explained during the morning conference this Thursday, March 24.
“We are going to give them facilities so that this port becomes a cruise port, because it has sufficient depth and there is no cruise port in this area, it is opposite, which is the island of Cozumel,” added the president.
López Obrador addressed the issue after being asked about the campaign launched by artists and environmentalists in opposition to the Mayan Train, arguing that when the material extraction permits were issued for Vulcan Materials “there was not a single complaint” about it.
He added “because they say that the train, which is going to pass through here, is going to pass through cenotes, through underwater rivers. All of this is guaranteed its protection, it will be protected”.
“But to them, who are concerned about the cenotes, I inform them that in the last administration they gave permission very close to here, but through Valladolid, to join cenotes below, underwater rivers and turn them into a recreation center like Xcaret, so that I understand. And maybe they don’t even know this or if they did they kept quiet because it wasn’t us,” added the president.
Although he did not mention it by name, the president’s allusion refers to the Xibalba park, which Grupo Xcaret is building in a circuit of cenotes in Valladolid, Yucatan, where an investment of 2,800 million pesos has been announced for the adaptation of the site for the reception massive tourism.
reforestation
Regarding the Mayan Train, the president insisted that “there is no destruction of the jungle, it is a gap of at most 50 kilometers of the 1,550 kilometers of track. And it is not a high mountain, it is not a jungle, it is an acahual, which is different”.
He assured that in exchange for the clearing of that gap, “we are planting 200,000 hectares of trees along the entire Mayan Train route. And we already agreed with the secretary that in the 1,500 kilometers of the train, from side to side, rows of trees that bear flowers, such as the guayacán, the maculí, the flamboyán, are going to be planted throughout the train route, and reforestation is being done ”.
