World number one Australian Ashley Party swept her unseeded US rival Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open tennis tournament, on Monday.
Thus, the 24-year-old Barty, who is nominated by some to become the first Australian to win her major country title in 43 years, has not lost a set in the first major tournaments of this season so far.
After all Australian players are eliminated from the tournament, hopes remain in her country for Barty, who lost in the semi-final of the last edition of this tournament.
“We haven’t achieved any goal yet,” said Barty.
She added, “It is beautiful to reach the quarter-finals in a new major tournament, especially here in Australia … But I am certainly not satisfied with what we have achieved so far … We will continue our endeavor and will continue to try to do what is required to advance as far as possible.”
In the next round, Barty will meet the Czech Karolina Mukhova, who earlier Monday beat the 18th seed, Elise Mertens, 7-6, 7-5.
