New York, USA (CNN) – Volkswagen CEO Herbert Deiss said he was not intimidated by Apple, even though the technology company is currently working on an electric vehicle.
“The auto industry is not a typical technology sector that you can take possession of in one fell swoop. Apple will not be able to do that overnight,” Deiss said in an interview with the German newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
Industry watchers have speculated for years that Apple will launch its electric, self-driving car. These conversations appeared again in December of 2020, when Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources, that Apple was planning to produce a passenger car by 2024.
And in April of 2017, Apple received permission from the California Automobile Administration to test self-driving vehicles there.
“There is a lot going on in electric and autonomous cars and connected technologies,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a note to investors in December 2020. “This may be the time for the world’s most important company to play its role in the global mobility market of 10.” A trillion dollars. “
Volkswagen also has ambitions to become a dominant force in the electric vehicle business, as the automaker sold 231,600 battery-powered electric cars in 2020, according to figures it published in January.
Although this number is less than half the number of sales made by “Tesla” last year, it represents an increase of 214% over the previous year, and shows that the huge car industry in Germany has begun to challenge the leader in electric cars.
For this reason, “when it comes to competing with Apple, we are not afraid,” says Deiss.
Even with the increase in speculation, Apple has remained silent about its auto ambition, and the company still needs an iCar partner.
