In a reveal with Wired [1], PS5 Lead Architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PlayStation 5 would have Backwards Compatibility with all PlayStation 4 games.
It will also be fully compatible with the PlayStation VR Headset and all of the PSVR Games currently available, though it is not known if the PSVR will see a new iteration.
Backwards Compatible Games
As of now, it has been confirmed that all PlayStation 4 Games will be compatible with the PS5 console.
Mark Cerny confirmed during a tech spec reveal presentation that Sony looked at the top 100 played PS4 games to take advantage of the PS5’s “boost mode’, and “almost all” of them will be playable in that state on the PS5 at launch.
As for games that are backwards compatible, “select” PS4 games will benefit from Game Boost, which “may make PS4 games run with a higher or smoother frame rate”.
However, according to Sony CEO Jim Ryan, the PS5 will not have backwards compatibility support for the PS3, PS2, or PS1 console games.
PS4 Games NOT Compatible With PS5
The games below are confirmed “PS4 only” games. This means these games will not be playable through the PS5’s backwards compatibility.
- DWVR
- Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
- TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
- Just Deal With It!
- Shadow Complex Remastered
- Robinson: The Journey
- We Sing
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Shadwen
- Joe’s Diner
Backwards Compatible VR Support
The PlayStation VR Headset and all of its games have been confirmed to be compatible with the PS5, though at this time it is not clear if the PSVR itself will get a new iteration or upgrade, or remain the same in the PS5’s life cycle.
