For Nicolás Maduro, the war in Ukraine represents “a new game.” After the cards are dealt, the dictator has all aces in his hand.
Maduro left Juan Guaidó and Leopoldo López, top opposition figures for the last five years, on the canvas.
The Venezuelan has brought Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron to their knees.
Not only did the aces fall from Russia, due to the war, but also from Colombia. With Gustavo Petro’s victory, he has given him a wild card to form a limerick of aces.
Last March, a high-level US delegation traveled to Caracas to propose energy agreements with Maduro. The invasion of the Ukraine had begun a few weeks before.
Biden left behind the offer made by then-President Donald Trump to the Venezuelan opposition: to strike a blow at Maduro. And of course he stopped recognizing, de facto, Juan Guaidó as Venezuelan president. In times of war there is no romanticism.
Biden showed Maduro that he was willing to do anything in exchange for taking pressure off the oil market. Necessary condition to start speaking: the release of two nephews of his wife: Franqui Flores and Efraín Campo, accused of drug traffickers. Indeed, Maduro released five former managers of Citgo, the subsidiary of the PDVSA oil company, arrested in 2017 in Venezuela.
Biden has buried the political corpse of Juan Guaidó. If the Venezuelan insists on believing himself president, Maduro will continue to laugh at his naivety.
In fact, Guaidó died politically the day he signed a contract to overthrow or kill Maduro: it was October 16, 2019. His team hired Florida-based security company Silvercorp.
It’s three years turned into a zombie.
The Venezuelan case will have to be studied in depth in the future. A series of concatenated circumstances have condemned a population of more than 30 million inhabitants to live in uncertainty. More than five million have already left the country because they do not want the dictator to shape their future.
What politician is going to do a cost assessment? None.
Maduro continues to be screwed in power and Guaidó has never acknowledged that his bet on Donald Trump was made in the market of lies. Now, both Biden and Macron are negotiating interactions with Maduro in the energy market. War is war. A Latin American dictatorship may be tolerable; they will think
Maduro’s team arrives in Mexico to negotiate an agreement with the opposition with the approval of Biden: goodbye to the locks imposed by the United States.
The dictatorship will once again make use of assets that were frozen.
Maduro bends Biden’s arm.
