The British Health Minister, Matt Hancock, said in a press conference held today, Monday, that “the new strain of Corona virus is a great pressure” on the medical institutions in the country.
Hancock stated that the number of patients with Coronavirus in British hospitals reached the level of 32,294 people, while the average number of deaths due to the disease in the country last week reached 926 cases per day, and he said in this context: “We are now at the worst point for this pandemic.”
The Minister of Health indicated that the government does not rule out resorting to more stringent precautionary measures to contain the spread of the virus, but he expressed his hope that the British will enjoy a “excellent summer” thanks to the launch of the mass vaccination process in the country, indicating that so far about 2.3 million people have been vaccinated with the dose. The first dose of the vaccine, including about 400,000 people, has just received the second dose.
He stressed that the vaccination process is proceeding at an accelerated pace, considering that this means that Britain is moving towards its goal of vaccinating 15 million elderly people until the middle of next February.
Britain is the fifth country in the world in terms of the outcome of recorded infections with the Coronavirus, with 3.072 million cases, and the United Kingdom is ranked fifth in terms of the number of victims of the pandemic with 81,431 deaths.
On December 8, the UK authorities launched a mass vaccination campaign against Coronavirus infection with a vaccine developed by the American “Pfizer” and the German “Biontech” company.
In recent weeks, the country has monitored an accelerated spread of the disease, and on December 14, the British Minister of Health announced that scientists had discovered a new strain of Corona virus, while the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said that it may be 70% more contagious.
