Bournemouth will take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Brentford after Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the first leg.
The Dutch winger finished off a fine counter-attacking move when he side-footed in from the edge of the penalty area from David Brooks’ precise through ball.
The Cherries created the bulk of the chances in front of a crowd of around 2,000 but Brentford missed opportunities to level the tie after going behind early in the second half.
Bryan Mbeumo poked an effort narrowly wide from six yards out with the goal gaping and Emiliano Marcondes was also denied by a smart block from Asmir Begovic.
But Danjuma almost added a second goal from a free-kick late on only for David Raya to palm it wide.
The two sides will meet again in the return leg at Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday.
Cherries cheered on to first-leg success
In what was one of the first sporting events to be allowed limited crowds back on the day coronavirus lockdown restrictions were eased across England, Bournemouth certainly responded to the noise and atmosphere their supporters were able to provide after a prolonged absence.
It was also the first time Jonathan Woodgate took charge of a Bournemouth side in front of a crowd after he was appointed manager in February.
His side certainly had the better of the chances in the first half, with Jefferson Lerma firing an ambitious volley narrowly over the crossbar, Philip Billing skewing a shot wide from 12 yards out and Dominic Solanke hitting the post with a downward header.
Steve Cook and Brooks were also denied in quick succession when Cook had his header from a corner saved low down by Raya and then Brooks’ follow-up was blocked near the post by Ivan Toney.
Brentford’s only real chances were limited to a couple of deflected efforts from Sergi Canos from outside the penalty area.
Bournemouth’s momentum looked like being checked by an enforced change before half-time as centre-back and captain Cook had to make way through injury for former Bees defender Chris Mepham.
However, it was from the first clear chance of the second half that they eventually broke the deadlock.
Pontus Jansson lost the ball in an advanced position shortly after being booked and Bournemouth pounced on the space he left at the back on the counter.
Wales international Brooks played a deft through ball that found Danjuma on the edge of the area, and the Dutch forward calmly finished into the bottom right corner for his 16th goal of the season.
Brentford rallied after going behind and a triple change on the hour saw forwards Marcondes and Mbeumo involved in their two best chances.
Somehow Mbeumo slid his effort inches wide from Christian Norgaard’s low cross while Marcondes could not get past stand-in Cherries skipper Begovic.
Brentford, who finished third in the regular season, tasted defeat for the first time in 13 games while sixth-placed Bournemouth found the perfect time to bounce back from three consecutive defeats.
