On Monday, Pine said, the arrest of Cheng (of Chinese origin) was officially announced on February 5, while she had been detained since August of last year.
She added that the Australian government “has regularly raised serious concerns at senior levels about Ms. Cheng’s detention, including about her safety and conditions of detention.”
Pine noted that Australian officials visited Cheng, who has two children living in Australia, 6 times during her detention, the most recent of which was at the end of January.
Prior to that, Cheng presented a commercial program on the English-language channel, at the largest government station in China, “CCTV”, and was a prominent broadcaster on its English-language channel, “CGTN”.
Tensions between Australia and China have increased over the past year, after Canberra called for an international investigation into the source of the Coronavirus pandemic, and Beijing responded with commercial retaliation.
