The White House is increasingly aware of the threat of climate change and its consequences, which is why President Joe Biden has ordered this Monday that a protection protocol be studied for workers who are exposed to the extreme rigors of the climate. Through a statement, the president of the United States assured that several agencies and departments of his administration will be in charge of ensuring that North Americans have “healthy and safe working conditions, refrigeration is provided to homes and neighborhoods, and local authorities are coordinated. and state to strengthen the response to the impact of the threat ”of climate change.
The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA, part of the Department of Labor) will be in charge of defining a regulatory process that establishes the maintenance of a standard temperature in workplaces exposed to cold and heat, such as agriculture, construction, goods delivery services and others.
The initiative of the Democratic Administration comes after a summer of record temperatures in the western United States and parts of Canada, something that scientists link to climate change. As reported by the National Weather Service (NWS), high temperatures are the leading cause of death in terms of weather.
“In recent weeks I have traveled across the country to see first-hand the devastation of human lives and the economic price we pay for the extreme weather caused by climate change,” said the US president in a statement. “Rising temperatures pose an immediate threat to millions of American workers who are exposed to inclement weather, to children in school without air conditioning, and to the elderly in residences without adequate cooling systems,” said Joe Biden. “My administration will not let the Americans face this threat alone.”
Biden’s arrival in the White House has imposed a 180 degree turn from his predecessor in office, Donald Trump. Last April, at the virtual summit on Climate, the democrat pledged before the UN that the net emissions of greenhouse gases in his country will be reduced between 50% and 52% in 2030 compared to the levels 2005. The turn is decisive and implies a profound transformation of the economy of this power. Biden’s commitment also means that its entire electricity sector will not be able to generate carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, by 2035.
The ultimate goal is for the US to achieve neutrality of its emissions by 2050, that is, that only the gases that sinks – such as forests – can capture can be expelled so that they do not accumulate in the atmosphere and overheat the planet .
