Cofepris warns of health risk in Playa Rosarito, Baja California

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) reported that of 259 beaches that it reviewed in 16 states of the country, 258 are suitable for vacationing this Christmas and New Year’s Eve season, except Rosarito beach located in the state of Baja California.

Through a statement, the cofepris indicated that as a result of the monitoring of seawater carried out so far in 16 coastal states of the country, the state health authorities and the National Network of Public Health Laboratories tested 2,246 samples for enterococci.

Of the 259 beaches, 258 are considered suitable for recreational use, while Rosarito beach, located in the state of Baja California, exceeded the established limits of 200 enterococci per 100 millimeters of water,” he said.

Rosarito was determined as unfit by the state and municipal authorities themselves to prevent possible health risks, due to the concentration of this microorganism found during the sampling.

Likewise, Cofepris reported that the results of the sampling that is still being carried out on 31 beaches in Guerrero will be added in the coming days, and the results will be announced through the Cofepris website.

The institutions determine if a beach is suitable or not, based on the guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO), and based on the Operational Manual for monitoring primary contact water in seawater from beaches and freshwater bodies.
