Colombian Juan Himez found his brother Jonathan in Norway, after a 32-year search for him.
In the details, Jonathan Himes (three years old) was playing with his brother Alfonso (seven years) in the garden of their home in western Bogota on September 25, 1988, when a family friend approached them and asked him to accompany him to buy him candy.
Jonathan went with the man and then disappeared, and the family had no trace of him for 32 years.
Their middle brother, Juan Hemens, 5, was looking out the window when the man took his brother.
Juan said he grew up between the guilt of Alfonso who did not prevent the man from taking his brother and the grief of their mother, Anna, over his disappearance.
Six years later, in 1994, the man came home claiming that the stepfather had asked him to take the child. The family did not discuss the mother’s husband’s issue any further, and Reuters could not contact him.
The man falsely said that Jonathan had been adopted in the United States.
Juan vowed to find his brother when he moved to the United States in 2007 to work as an actor. “This was the most important thing for me,” he said.
Years later, Juan met the man who took the baby, on social media, but the man passed away before they met. It was around this time that he received an email from a DNA company about a competition they were running to win a free quiz for the most influential family story.
He said, “This is how I sent my brother’s story, and they replied that they accepted it.”
In 2019, Juan received a letter from a lawyer in Norway, in which he said that he had been adopted at the age of four and was trying to search for his real family.
Juan traveled to Norway in 2020 to meet Jonathan, whose name changed to John, then the two brothers returned to Colombia.
Jonathan grew up knowing he was adopted from Colombia, but was told that his real parents abandoned him and left him in a shelter in Ibague.
Jonathan only learned of his kidnapping after returning to Colombia when he was reunited with his family.
Mother (Anna) said that she “never lost hope to see Jonathan again”.
