A US official told CNN that the accused perpetrator of the shooting in Baudelaire, Colorado, Ahmed Al-Alawi, 21, was transferred from the county jail after receiving death threats from other inmates.
Jeff Goetz, head of the Boulder County Jail department, stated that Al-Issa was transferred from the prison early Wednesday morning, stressing that Al-Issa had not had direct contact with the other prisoners and was not harmed, except that the inmates were asking about him and making threats against him.
This step came before Al-Issa appeared in court on Thursday, when he was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder.
Al-Issa appeared in the court in a wheelchair wearing a muzzle and did not speak until the judge asked him if he understood his rights.
Prosecutors in court said that further charges could be brought against him, and authorities have not yet shared information about his possible motive.
During the hearing, Al-Issa’s attorney, Catherine Herold, indicated the need for a full psychological evaluation.
His brother, Ali Al-Alawi, told CNN earlier this week that he may be mentally ill and that he was bullied in high school because of his name and because he is a Muslim.
He indicated that his brother had become “paranoid” in 2014, believing that he was being pursued and chased.
