Complaints against the INM for rights violations grow 72.8%

According to data from the National Human Rights Violation Alert System, during the past year, the complaints received by the National Human Rights Commission regarding human rights violations by the National Migration Institute increased by 72.8 percent.

From January to December 2022, the INM received 2,141 complaints, 902 accusations more than the 1,239 that the Institute received during the same period in 2021.

In this total number of complaints for last year, the violation that was repeated the most times was the one related to actions and omissions that violate the rights of migrants and their families, which accumulated 1,312; followed by lack of legality, honesty, loyalty, impartiality and efficiency in the performance of functions, jobs, charges or commissions, which was denounced 1,159 times.

In addition, the improper provision of public service occurred 898 times, and it was the third of the violations that was most reported in the complaints of 2022.

Figures from last year placed the INM as the third federal institution with the most complaints, only behind the Mexican Institute of Social Security (3,789) and the Decentralized Administrative Body for Prevention and Social Readaptation of the Secretariat of Public Citizen Security (2,679).

The entity where the most cases were presented was Chiapas, which concentrated 27.23% after collecting 583 complaints from migrants.

Mexico City, with 249 complaints (11.63%) and Tabasco, which brought together, throughout 2022, 227 accusations (10.6%), together with the aforementioned, are the three states where the most accusations were raised against the immigration authorities, in the Mexican republic.

According to the figures of the National Alert System of the CNDH, of the 2,141 complaints registered in 2022, 70.8% (1,517) had been concluded for reasons ranging from the declaration that the complaint had no matter, to guidance and resolution during the process. respective.

Fabienne Cabaret, coordinator of the Comprehensive Defense of the Foundation for Justice and the Rule of Law, explained in an interview that the foundation has observed a tightening of the personal attention given to migrants inside the INM stations, this from north to south of the country.

He indicated that the treatment given to migrants has not been of a better quality and this is due, in large part, to a “vortex of criminalization of migration.”

“The collaboration of the GN (with the INM) is nothing more in the sense that I detain a person, I give it to migration and I’m leaving (…) the GN does not represent a counterweight to the actions of Migration; Rather, instead of facing each other, the migrants only face the INM, now they face two corporations,” the specialist commented.

For her part, Fernanda Rivero, communication coordinator for Sin Fronteras, reported that migrating and requesting asylum is a human right, and that the Mexican State must offer migrants regularization.

“If the Mexican State (…) is accepting these people, it is because it must have a migration plan, it must give access to these people, to request asylum and receive asylum because these people are fleeing their country because they do not have the possibility to return”.
