Kevin Durant just turned 33 years old and will soon face what will be his 15th NBA season with the aim of giving the Brooklyn Nets the first title in their history.
The two-time NBA Finals MVP has explained to the media ESPN his evolution as a player since he was selected by the defunct Seattle Supersonics with the 2nd pick of the 2007 Draft.
“When you are younger you want to establish yourself in the league early,” Durant said. “Sometimes you can overthink it and you can think a lot about the reactions and opinions of others because you are on your journey to perfection. But you have to start to relax a little and understand what this is all about, and understand that this is a long-term sport. And definitely understanding it has made my mentality a little calmer by coming every day to train and not focusing on all those things, “he explained.
The Nets are widely considered favorites for the title alongside the reigning champions, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Lakers’ new project. Harden, Irving, Durant, Joe Harris, Millsap, Aldridge, Griffin… A host of notable players who topped the Eastern Semifinals last year.
“Yes, external pressure doesn’t really matter much to us. I think we all push ourselves internally because we push ourselves a lot every day and you want to play well every time you go out on the pitch. This is how we are the competitors ”, he acknowledged.
“As for outside noise, without disrespecting journalists, our families, friends and even fans who expect us to do so much… If we are not up to the task, at the end of the day it does not matter too much. But we want to go out and play great basketball every night and we push ourselves. I hope we hit the track with some swagger and a lot of intensity. But the noise outside should not matter too much to this large group of players, “he concluded.
