US President-elect Joe Biden has taken another step closer to the White House with the major states in the electoral college system officially endorsing his victory in the November 3rd elections on Monday, effectively ending the current US President Donald Trump’s quest to change the results.
The electoral college votes for each state took on great significance due to Trump’s allegation that widespread fraud was taking place without foundation.
The results of the November elections show that Democrat Biden, who previously held the position of US Vice President, won 306 votes in the electoral college, surpassing the 270-vote barrier needed to win the US presidential seat. Biden and Vice President Kamel Harris are due to start their term on January 20.
There is no chance that Monday’s vote will invalidate Biden’s victory. With Trump’s legal campaign faltering to turn the results in his favor, the president’s hopes of clinging to power hinge on a special meeting of the US Congress on January 6.
Biden’s transition team said in a statement that the president-elect will deliver a speech at 8:00 pm EST today (0100 GMT on Tuesday) about the electoral college and “the strength and resilience of our democracy.”
Electors in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin voted in favor of Biden on Monday, confirming his victory in crucial states, and Trump tried to challenge its results in court, to no avail.
Once the electoral college vote is complete, Trump’s only remaining gambit will be to convince Congress not to ratify the result on January 6.
