Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has praised a teacher who was murdered in a knife attack at Gambetta high school in Arras, France. Dominique Bernard, a French literature teacher, was allegedly killed by a 20-year-old Chechen refugee named Mohamed Mogouchkov. Witnesses reported hearing the attacker shout “Allahu Akbar,” and French interior minister Gerald Darmanin stated that the incident had links to the Middle East. In response, Hamas, a Palestinian terror group, called on Muslims to demonstrate on a “day of Jihad.” Macron condemned the attack as an act of Islamist terrorism and commended the teacher for protecting others, potentially saving many lives. The attacker has been placed under arrest, and additional family members have been detained for investigation purposes. France has raised its alert level to its highest position and will deploy 7,000 soldiers to maintain order. The country’s president also stated that another attempted terrorist incident had been foiled by security forces. The incident comes almost three years after the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty by a Chechen. Macron visited the school, paying his respects to the deceased teacher and meeting with students.
