- The FBI is kicking off an investigation into Santos in excess of a potential GoFundMe rip-off, for each Politico.

Federal brokers are investigating accusations that Republican Rep. George Santos took much more than $3,000 from a GoFundMe fundraiser intended for a armed service veteran’s dying pet dog, for each Politico.
Rich Osthoff, a former service member who life in New Jersey, advised Politico he was contacted on Wednesday by brokers looking for details on Santos.
“I am happy to get the ball rolling with the significant-wigs,” Osthoff told Politico. “I was concerned that what took place to me was too extended ago to be prosecuted.”
Osthoff in January accused Santos of pocketing $3,000 that was intended for his dog, Sapphire, who was dying from a stomach tumor.
Osthoff advised the information outlet Patch that he had been launched to a guy named Anthony Devolder — just one of Santos’ acknowledged aliases — in 2016. Devolder established up a GoFundMe site for Sapphire in Could 2016. Even so, Devolder started out ghosting Osthoff right after far more than $3,000 was lifted, Patch described.
Osthoff explained to Patch Sapphire died in January 2017 immediately after he could not afford to pay back for her surgery.
GoFundMe advised Insider in January that the platform taken out Santos’ fundraiser for Sapphire in 2016, and place a ban on his email immediately after they could not get in touch with him.
“When we obtained a report of an challenge with this fundraiser in late 2016, our believe in and basic safety group sought proof of the delivery of funds from the organizer,” GoFundMe explained to Insider.
“The organizer unsuccessful to respond, which led to the fundraiser getting taken off and the electronic mail related with that account prohibited from even more use on our system,” GoFundMe included in its assertion.
ABC reporter Will Steakin asked Santos issues about the investigation on Capitol Hill on Wednesday. Santos told Steakin he has “no clue” about the DBI investigation, and has “under no circumstances met” Osthoff.
Santos earlier denied realizing Osthoff in a January reaction to Semafor, when news about the GoFundMe first broke.
“Faux,” Santos told Semafor via textual content message. “No clue who this is.”
A representative for Santos did not instantly respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Santos has admitted to lying about several aspects of his previous, including going to university, remaining Jewish, and working at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup. The congressman this 7 days claimed he will step down from his positions on two Dwelling committees.
Even with these scandals, Santos has refused to resign from his congressional seat, expressing he will only do so if the folks who voted for him in New York demand it. But a poll of Santos’ district this 7 days indicated that an overpowering 78% of voters in the district want Santos out.
The Department of Justice and the US Attorney’s Office environment in the Japanese District of New York did not answer to requests for comment from Insider.
