FIFA opens disciplinary files against Uruguay, Giménez, Cavani, Muslera and Godín

FIFA announced on Monday the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and four players from La Celeste (José Giménez, Edinson CavaniFernando Muslera, Diego Godin) for the incidents at the end of the match against Ghana that meant Uruguay’s elimination from the World Cup.

Last Friday, Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 but that victory did not prevent their goodbye to the tournament in the group stage, after that third and last date.

At the end of the match, several players staged angry protests against those responsible for arbitration, accompanied by various incidents, which now motivate this measure by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, thus opening the door to eventual sanctions.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened files against the Uruguayan Football Association for potential violations of articles 11 (offensive behavior and violations of the principles of fair play), 12 (misconduct of players and managers) and 13 (discrimination). of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to incidents during the match between Ghana and Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup, which took place on December 2,” FIFA explained in a brief statement.

“Separate files were opened against the Uruguayan players José María Giménez, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera and Diego Godín for potential violations of articles 11 and 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to the incidents that occurred at the end of said match.” he added.

Suarez’s precedent

The end of the match between the Uruguayans and the Ghanaians was marked by enormous tension.

La Celeste was calm with their 2-0 win over the Black Stars, until in the other group game that was being played at the same time, South Korea scored in discount and beat Portugal 2-1.

A goal that indirectly eliminated Uruguay, in the most painful way, for which the Celeste team launched itself in search of a third goal that did not arrive and that would have given them the ticket to the round of 16.

This enervated the spirits of the South American team, which was very unhappy with the refereeing by German Daniel Siebert, who whistled a penalty in favor of Ghana in the first half but then did not concede the ones that Uruguay claimed, especially one to Cavani and another to Darwin Núñez. In this last case, the referee had gone to review the screen through the VAR but chose not to decree a penalty.

At the end of the game, several Uruguayan players surrounded and vehemently rebuked the referee for his decisions, in a succession of shoving, shouting and angry claims.

Giménez was one of those who had the most angry attitude and in his protests he also hit a FIFA member with his elbow, while Cavani punched the VAR screen as he retired to the locker room.

A Uruguayan soccer player already received a very important sanction from FIFA at a recent World Cup. It was the attacker Luis Suárez, who for biting the Italian Giorgio Chiellini in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was later punished with a nine official match suspension and four months of disqualification from all football-related activities.
