(Trends Wide Spanish) — The former head of the Honduran National Police Juan Carlos Bonilla, who was handed over to the United States authorities on Tuesday, will be presented this Wednesday before a federal judge in the Southern District of New York. According to a statement from the Department of Justice, Bonilla was indicted on charges of allegedly conspiring to “import cocaine into the United States” and weapons-related crimes, which involve the “use and possession of machine guns and destructive devices.”
Trends Wide is trying to find out who will be his lawyer in the United States. On several occasions, Bonilla has declared himself innocent of the charges brought against him by the US justice system.
Ramón Matamoros, a lawyer for the former official in Honduras, told Trends Wide on Tuesday that his client will plead not guilty to the charges against him; In addition, Matamoros stated that the evidence that the former police director will present is already in the United States.
Bonilla was captured on March 9 in the community of Zambrano, in the north of Tegucigalpa, the capital of the Central American country, by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by the judge appointed to hear the US indictment.
