English club Tottenham announced today, Sunday, the death of former Sabers and Chelsea striker Jimmy Greaves at the age of 81.
Tottenham issued a statement on Sunday morning saying, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great Jimmy Greaves, not only the club’s record goalscorer but the best goalscorer this country has ever seen.”
And Tottenham continued: “Jimmy died at his home early Sunday morning at the age of 81.”
Jamie has had a phenomenal goal rate throughout his brilliant football career, scoring for Tottenham 266 goals in 379 games between 1961 and 1970 as well as 220 goals in 321 league games.
He also scored 32 goals in 36 FA Cup matches, five goals in only eight League Cup matches, and nine goals in 14 European matches..
He also scored 37 league goals in the 1962/63 season, the record for any Tottenham player so far.
He was also a member of the England World Cup winning team in 1966, Jamie also scored 44 goals in 57 major international matches..
Born in East Ham on February 20, 1940, Jimmy started his youth career at Chelsea where he turned professional in May 1957..
He scored his debut for the Blues, something that became a familiar feature throughout his career and ironically scored against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on August 24, 1957 in a 1-1 draw..
He remained at Stamford Bridge until June 1961, and then went on to play with Milan, his record of 41 Premier League goals in 1960/61 still sets a Chelsea record for one season..
However, his career in Italy did not last long. He scored 9 goals in 14 Serie A matches, but he never settled in Milan, and then joined Tottenham in 1961..
