The search engine “Google” celebrated, today, Saturday, the memory of the late Tunisian doctor, Tawhida Bin Sheikh (1909 – 2010), who was the first female doctor in Tunisia and the Maghreb.

In this regard, the Tunisian site “Mosaique FM” revealed the identity of this doctor, and indicated that:
Tawhida Ben El Sheikh was the first female doctor in Tunisia and the Maghreb, and she was born in January 1909, and died in Tunis on December 6, 2010.
After Tunisia’s independence, Dr. Tawhida Ben El-Sheikh assumed several positions, including managing the obstetrics and infant medicine department at Charles Nicole Hospital in the capital from 1955 to 1964, and she also established a special department for family planning in the same hospital in 1963, and also took the position of head of the obstetrics department. And infant medicine at Aziza Othmana Hospital in Tunis, and she was appointed in 1970 as Director of the National Office for Family Planning.
Tawhida Ben El-Sheikh contributed to intellectual life through her writings, and supervised the first French-speaking Tunisian women’s magazine, published from 1936 to 1941 under the title “Leila”.
– In the year 1950, the Tunisian doctor founded the Tunisian Garment Association to take care of infants from the children of needy families, and also contributed to the establishment of the National Ambulance Committee, and in 1958 she became a member of the Tunisian Doctors Deanship.
– The Tunisian elite celebrated the monotheism of Bin Sheikh in recognition of her medical and intellectual contributions, and her career was discussed in a documentary entitled “Nidal Wise”. The Tunisian Post also issued postage stamps bearing her name and photo, and a number of doctors established a medical association named “Tawhida Bel Sheikh Association for Medical Support.” In recognition of her status and contributions that continued until the date of her death in 2010. ”
“Mosaique FM” reported that Tawhidah bin Al-Sheikh also made contributions to the press, as she contributed her writings, while a student, to the annual newsletter of the North African Muslim Students Association, and that in 1936 she contributed to writing in Leila’s weekly French-speaking magazine, which is considered the first women’s magazine.
