Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Hundreds of employees of Google and its parent company Alphabet have formed a federation, in a rare move for the technology sector that also represents the biggest and most organized challenge to the company’s executive leadership.
The Alphabet Workers’ Union announced Monday morning will manage the employees, and will be available to both the full-time workers and contractors of the tech giant.
Dylan Baker, a software engineer at Google, said in a statement, “This is historic. The first union in a major tech company by and for all tech workers. We will elect representatives, we will make decisions in a democratic way, we will pay dues, and we will hire skilled organizers to make sure that All Google employees know they can work with us if they really want to see their company reflect their values. “
He launched the union with more than 200 members, according to an article in The New York Times published by the group Monday morning. As many as 226 group members signed union cards with United Telecommunication Workers of America, one of the largest unions in the country.
And Andrew Gennier-Dewar, a software engineer at Google who helped lead the union formation effort, said the work to build the union began in secret more than a year ago.
Unions can be accredited by the state when a majority votes in the workplace to support them in elections held by the National Council for Labor Relations. Alternatively, the employer can also voluntarily recognize the union if a sufficient number of workers indicate that they wish the union to negotiate on their behalf.
