Greece, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to manage the Suez Canal, expressed its readiness to support Egypt’s efforts to re-navigate through the canal, whether at the level of the aground ship’s diameter or the dredging work.
The Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday: As a maritime nation par excellence, and possessing the largest merchant fleet in the world, we attach special importance to the value of free and unimpeded navigation around the world, and for this reason we care so much about the delinquency of the container ship “Ever Givin” in the Canal. The statement added, “The Greek side is following developments closely, hoping that the Suez Canal will be available again for international navigation in the near future.”
Earlier, the head of the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, announced that work will continue 24 hours to float the delinquent ship, and that 10 locomotives and two bulldozers work with a push-pull system to free the ship.
He said, “At the present time the tide is high … and we are taking advantage of this period of towing and pushing with bulldozers.”
He added, “We were able to free the ship’s rudder, and it is now moving at 30 degrees to the right and the same to the left, and the thruster is working now. All these things were not moving, and God willing, the bulldozers continue their work, as they were able to create a level of water under the thrusters and the rudder.”
He pointed out that the ship’s delinquency was the result of several simultaneous errors, and that the ship had taken a wrong direction.
