Holland summons the injured Memphis Depay and Xavi Simons for the World Cup

The technical director of the Netherlands, Louis van Gaalincluded the injured Barcelona striker Memphis Depay and inexperienced youngster Xavi Simons on his 26-man World Cup squad, but left out veteran goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Depay has not played since limping off during the Netherlands’ UEFA Nations League match against Poland on September 22, appearing for fewer than 150 minutes for Barcelona this season.

But Van Gaal had said his top scorer would be assured of the spot as long as there was a chance he would play during the tournament.

Xavi Simons, 19, has made quite an impression since his recent transfer from Paris Saint Germain to PSV Eindhoven, scoring eight goals in 13 league games.

Van Gaal caused a surprise in goal by shutting out Cillessen, 33, who rejoined his former club NEC Nijmegen from Valencia in hopes of reviving his international career.
