Lima, Jan 10 (.) .- The president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone, highlighted this Monday the “responsible economic management” of the Government of the president of Peru, the leftist Pedro Castillo.
After holding a teleconference with Castillo, Claver-Carone said in RPP Noticias that the good economic results of 2021 in Peru should help regain the confidence of investors, supported by institutions such as the IDB.
In particular, the IDB president highlighted the 13.2% growth projected for 2021 in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which will be one of the largest in Latin America after the Peruvian economy collapsed -11% in 2020.
He also mentioned tax revenues, which in 2021 reached close to 140,000 million soles (about 35,600 million dollars) and a tax burden of 16.1% of GDP, the highest in the last seven years, while the The fiscal deficit will close at less than 3% when at the beginning of the years it projected more than 6%.
Thus, Claver-Carone hoped that Peru could leave behind the speculations that surrounded the Peruvian economy in 2021 and enter 2022 with confidence, to which the IDB wants to contribute with an already closed portfolio of projects of 2,000 million dollars to close gaps of rural connectivity and logistics.
The IDB president also added that “Peru is in a privileged position thanks to the management that we are seeing today” and highlighted Castillo’s concern for promoting connectivity and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The meeting was also attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Óscar Maúrtua de Romaña; and from Economy and Finance, Pedro Francke.
This was the second meeting between Castillo and Claver-Carone, after the first held in September 2021 within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York.
