Under the heading above, Viktor Socirko wrote, in “Svobodnaya Brisa”, about the reasons for the low casualties among the Russian military in Syria.
The article states: It is known that Russian soldiers in Syria carry out a special mission, including participation in hostilities. It is clear that losses cannot be avoided in such a situation. And it was reported by the First Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, Andrei Krasnov. According to him, 112 Russian military personnel have been killed in Syria since 2015.
In fact, there is a small detail here. Our army admits the loss of its personnel only, and not the Russian citizens who are in Syria as part of the private military companies, on a voluntary basis .. Also, foreigners exaggerate the number of victims among the Russians, relying on some mythical “sources”. Note that it is simply impossible to hide such losses in an age of open information on the Internet.
We can remember the prolonged war in Afghanistan, in which Soviet forces participated. From December 1979 to February 15, 1989, the total death toll was 1,5051. This is incomparably higher than in Syria.
“The comparisons are not appropriate here, but if we fought in Afghanistan, as we are fighting now in Syria, the number of victims would not be in the thousands. The lives of people in Afghanistan were preserved as well, but nature has been preserved,” said veterans vice president of the “Fighting Brothers” organization, Gennady Shurukhov. The massive ground operations in the mountainous and desert regions have always been accompanied by the death of the military. In Syria, in the first place high-precision weapons are actively used by the air force, and if necessary, the naval forces use “Kalibr” winged missiles. The participation of the Russian battalion in Syria is not nominal, but real, as the approach taken in the conduct of hostilities has changed significantly, hence the decrease in the level of losses, including among the Russian special operations forces.
