(CNN Business) – The US Department of Labor said Thursday that 787,000 Americans filed for the first time for unemployment benefits during the week of Christmas.
The number of recent orders indicates a decrease from the previous week. In general, female jobless women remain high above historical standards, indicating continued labor market suffering during the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to regular unemployment claims, another 308,262 workers applied for assistance under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program, which provides benefits to people who are not eligible for regular government assistance, such as self-employed and temporary workers.
In all, 1.1 million Americans have filed initial applications for unemployment benefits, unadjusted for seasonal fluctuations.
The unemployment benefit payments under the new stimulus package signed by US President Donald Trump will be extended into law on Sunday. The bill would also expand the regular state benefits by $ 300 per week.
Meanwhile, 5.2 million workers filed continuous requests for a second week or more of benefits in the week ending Dec.19.
