In Puebla, only 10% of hotels have revalidated their star classification: Ministry of Tourism

Puebla, Pue. The state Ministry of Tourism estimated that only 10% of hotels have obtained or revalidated the classification on the number of stars they must have to function and that guarantees visitors that they are staying in a place according to what they are paying.

In an interview, Martha Ornelas Guerrero, head of the Puebla agency, explained that, as a rule, establishments in the sector must have this classification; however, so far it has only been required on a voluntary basis.

He said that during the first year of the pandemic and still until 2021, the process for that classification was postponed, but that last August it was resumed, which is granted by the Ministry of Tourism (It follows) federal via the state agency in charge of the process.

He pointed out that it is important that hoteliers have updated information on the number of stars of each establishment, since otherwise they must stop offering them, especially on the Internet, where tourists often look for a place to book.

Ornelas Guerrero urged the hoteliers that they comply with that rule, because he did not rule out that at some point they will make it mandatory if they do not see a response.

He indicated that they have had a rapprochement with the Puebla Association of Hotels and Motels to find out about the classification process and hope that there will be an echo of the call made by the state agency.

He explained that there are more than 300 hotels in the capital of Puebla, which means around 12,000 rooms, while throughout the state there are 1,127 complexes with a total of 28,000 rooms available.

On the other hand, he indicated that service providers are preparing for the Christmas season, as they expect a good influx of visitors.

He recalled that the entity from Puebla brings good numbers in hotel occupancyso they expect to close 2022 with an average 60% in the case of the capital of Puebla, which until last October reported 56 percent.

He indicated that it will close with 13 million visitors and an economic benefit of 10,000 million pesos, positive figures compared to the fall in the tourism sector in 2020 due to the pandemic, and that in 2021 it was barely recovering.
