The Cavaliers’ streak came to an end in Boston. The Celtics beat Ohio 111-101 to prevent them from adding their seventh consecutive victory and to take their 16th win of the season, balancing their balance of games won and lost. Udoka’s painting continues to not be able to fully take off this season, but this time it managed to emerge thanks to the talent of Jaylen Brown.
The forward, with 34 points and 6 rebounds, was the best player of the match and led the locals during their best moments. Their ability to generate good shots and their effectiveness in them (12/24) helped Massachusetts to take the reins of the clash, in which they were practically always ahead, and to build a considerable advantage that allowed them to live a night of some tranquility. The Celtics went on to lead by up to 23 points in the third quarter, and although the Cavs managed to cut differences, this only allowed them to make up the score.
Jaylen thus took over a duel that, like almost all these days, was marked by numerous absences due to security protocols. Specifically, Cleveland could not have up to seven players for this reason, including three starters such as Isaac Okoro, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, which left them with a very short rotation and forced Bickerstaff to take decisions like using Tacko Fall as the starting center. In Boston, the list of short men was also lengthened, and included players of the weight of Al Horford or Grant Williams.
This gave the opportunity to count on minutes to less common or new men, among whom the name of Joe Johnson undoubtedly stood out. The forward made his return to the league three and a half years after his last appearance, and had just under two minutes on the floor to show off his skills. Although his time was scarce and he was limited to minutes from the garbage, it was enough for him to show off his talent by scoring a house-brand basket, and we will see if with the passage of the days he manages to have a greater presence.
Who had it was Robert Williams, who took advantage of the losses in the Cavaliers paint to sign a great performance and second to Brown. With 21 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists, the center had a very complete night, in which he also showed effectiveness and resources to score 10 of his 12 field shots. Jayson Tatum was not so fine, who stayed at 6/19 in shooting but was still the third in scoring of his team with 18 goals.
On the visiting side, Darius Garland tried to help the Cavs keep up with 28 points, but the absences and bad night of men like Markkanen or Rubio (both finished with a 2/12 shooting) made him the only one. starter in double digits, which left Ohioans very short. Kevin Love and Cedi Osman, with 18 and 13 points respectively from the bench, contributed a little more, but could not prevent theirs from always being in tow and ending up seeing their winning streak cut short.
