The St George Illawarra Dragons have applied to the NRL to sign former league and Wallabies player Israel Folau.
Folau is currently playing rugby league in France for the Catalans Dragons, having been stood down by the Wallabies in 2019 for homophobic social media posts.
He had previously played in the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm before leaving the code in 2010 to play for the GWS Giants in the AFL, en route to a more successful rugby union career.
The NRL and ARLC chairman Peter V’Landys’s previous stance on Folau was that he would not be allowed back in the league.
“The game is inclusive. Israel’s comments are not inclusive,” V’landys said in his first press conference in the role in 2019.
“When I was a kid and kids used to get bashed up because they were different, I used to go and defend them. And a lot of them, it’s because their role models or their peers made them that way.
“With due respect to Israel, what he says, young kids listen to. He is a role model. They act on it. And when you’re a kid at school and you get bashed up because you’re different, I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
More to come.
