Juanes’ SummerStage concert — a series of free concerts on a stage inside the iconic park — had a capacity of 5,000 people, but according to event organizers, at least another 12,000 crowded outside the gates.
“Given the continued crowding at the doors, and as a precautionary measure, the decision was made to stop the show during the performance of their second song, and fans were asked to leave the venue,” Latin Alternative Music detailed in a statement. Conference and City Parks Foundation SummerStage.
They added that this was the first time in 30 years that a concert had to be canceled for that reason.
“I take this opportunity to thank all the people who were there for having shown that affection,” Juanes told CNN.
“I will return, obviously, with more enthusiasm,” he added.
“To all the fans, I love you so much. Thank you for the love, New York, and see you very soon,” Juanes emphasized, through CNN.
Users of social networks regretted the cancellation and pointed out that the organization for more famous artists should be improved.
“It was to be expected, Juanes is a great rock star in Spanish,” commented one user.
“Next time with pre-registration only,” posted another user.
