Mexico City, Feb 27 (.).- The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has reported that this Monday he will hold a telephone conversation with the owner of Tesla (NASDAQ:), the magnate Elon Musk, who intends to install a electric vehicle factory in the country.
“I have a call with the owner of Tesla and I don’t want to (be late), I want to be on time, it’s in a teleconference and I’ll talk to them tomorrow,” the president said during his morning press conference.
The conversation between López Obrador and Musk takes place in the midst of negotiations on the installation of a Tesla plant in Mexico, which could be in the northern state of Nuevo León, which the tycoon visited last October; or in the center or southeast of the country, as the Government would prefer.
Last week, the Mexican president asserted that he would not grant the permit to the electric vehicle company in Nuevo León on the grounds of the lack of water in the state.
The water crisis suffered by Nuevo León, the country’s industrial pole and border state with Texas, forced last year to restrict the supply of water for a time in Monterrey, the state capital and the second most populous city in the country.
Tesla’s arrival in Mexico has been rumored since Musk visited Nuevo León last October, where he met with the influential Mariana Rodríguez, wife of the governor of Nuevo León, the opposition Samuel García.
But federal government officials have expressed their desire for Tesla to be installed near the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), López Obrador’s priority work for the Mexican capital, or in the southeast of the country, an area of special relevance for the Mexican administration.
