Dozens of police and civilians were injured during International Women’s Day demonstrations in Mexico City, Mexico, as thousands of women protested violence against women across the country.
On Monday, Mexico City witnessed a solidarity march for women’s equal rights and liberation. The authorities in the capital fenced buildings and historical monuments to protect them from vandalism, but some women set fire to them and were exposed to some police.
Feminist groups took to the streets of Mexico on Monday to demand an end to the murders and abuses against women, in a country where about 10 women are killed every day.
The demonstrators carried pictures of the murdered women and banners reading “Mexico is a femicide” and “They did not kill me, but I live in fear.”
In Mexico City, demonstrators marched to the National Palace, the seat of the federal executive.
More than 2,000 unarmed policewomen were deployed to provide security during the demonstrations.
The march resulted in the injury of 62 policemen and 19 civilians. Nine police officers and one civilian were taken to hospital, and they are in stable condition, according to the Russian news agency RIA.
More than 3,700 women were killed in Mexico last year, including about 967 cases that were classified as gender-based killings, or “femicide”. Reports of domestic violence also increased during the Coronavirus pandemic.
