The death by suffocation, according to the first investigations, of 46 migrants found this Monday in an abandoned trailer near San Antonio, Texas, is the umpteenth episode of a daily drama that stains the southern and northern borders of Mexico with blood. Just a few months ago, in December 2021, the accident of a truck that overturned and broke in two near Tuxtla Gutiérrez left 55 dead and 107 injured. Then it happened in Chiapas, very close to Guatemala, through which a large part of the human trafficking from Central America passes. Today in the United States, but both episodes are the reflection of an unresolved structural tragedy that challenges the governments of both countries: that of the insecurity of migrants and the lack of control of the mafias.
Mexico is often the territory where the dreams of those fleeing violence or misery are shattered. This is the case, for example, of a group of 16 Guatemalan migrants who were shot dead last year and then burned in Tamaulipas, a border state in the north of the country where drug cartels have been operating for decades. With these premises, the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Administration of Joe Biden have been working since the beginning of 2021 to renew a security strategy and reach an agreement on migration.
That was one of the issues addressed at the ninth Summit of the Americas held in early June in Los Angeles. The Mexican president did not attend, although he is scheduled to meet his US counterpart at the White House on July 15. And in any case, the authorities of the two countries are committed to improving collaboration on the border and against organized crime.
As reported by the Mexican consul in San Antonio, among the 16 survivors transferred to nearby hospitals, four were minors. “In this last group, two Guatemalans have been identified. The trailer has United States plates, superimposed to circulate without inspection. The authorship of traffickers is very likely”, stated the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, based on the information received. The United States has opened a federal investigation and the security forces have already arrested three alleged perpetrators.
