An MP who sparked a fierce public backlash after allegedly travelling 700 miles with coronavirus paid for her overnight stay with public expenses.

Margaret Ferrier, 60, travelled from Glasgow to Westminster and back again in September while suffering with Covid, it has been claimed.

The former SNP MP allegedly travelled from Scotland to the House of Commons while waiting for the results of a coronavirus test – and then made the return journey after being informed she had the virus.

Ms Ferrier claimed £175 in expenses for the overnight stay, according to data released by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

The 60-year-old had the SNP whip removed last year after it emerged she allegedly travelled from Glasgow to the House of Commons while waiting for the results of a Covid-19 test - and then made the return journey after being informed she had the virus

Her claim, which is within parliamentary rules, shows her paying £525 originally for the September 28 stay, but there is a refund of £350 the next day – for the cost of the two remaining nights.

Last year Nicola Sturgeon kicked her out of the Scottish National Party, and in January Ms Ferrier was arrested for allegedly putting lives at risk.

She remains the independent MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

Police Scotland charged her with culpable and reckless conduct – a charge which, if she is convicted, could see her face prison.

In October the Metropolitan Police said it would take ‘no further action’ against the MP following an investigation.

Ms Ferrier has been contacted for comment.
