NBA warns teams that unvaccinated players will not be allowed to play in Toronto after January 15 due to Canadian vaccine mandate
Unvaccinated NBA players will no longer be allowed to travel to Toronto to play the Raptors after January 15 due to new Canadian travel restrictions, according to a league memo obtained by DailyMail.com.
The NBA sent the memo to teams, including physicians and trainers, detailing new protocols for international travel over the remainder of the season.
Beginning January 15, Canada will require all visitors to be fully vaccinated. There will be criteria for limited exceptions, such as medical conditions, but those people will be required to quarantine for 14 days, which would preclude unvaccinated players from being available for a road game in Toronto.
Furthermore, any unvaccinated, foreign-born players on temporary US visas will be prevented from re-entering the country should they travel beyond the border. So, for instance, an unvaccinated player with a temporary visa shouldn’t plan to visit family oversees during All-Star weekend in February because they won’t be allowed to return to finish the season.
The new travel restrictions may not be too impactful for the NBA, a league that has about 97 percent of its players vaccinated. In fact, 60 percent of league players have also received their booster shots, according to ESPN.
