Opposition asks to investigate the death of migrants in a fire at a detention center

The national leaders of the PAN, Marko Cortes, from AT, Alejandro Moreno Cardenas; and of the PRDJesús Zambrano, separately demanded that the federal government investigate the fire that caused the death of at least 40 migrants in accommodation of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.

PAN member Marko Cortés said that the videos already circulating about the moment the fire occurred show that it was a “state crime” in the immigration detention center, for which he demanded the immediate resignation of Marcelo Ebrard, secretary Of Foreign Affairs; Adán Augusto López, Secretary of the Interior, and the commissioner of the INMFrancisco Garduño Yáñez.

Cortés Mendoza expressed his condolences to the families of the 40 dead migrants and estimated that the tragedy is a consequence of the “lurching” of the government’s immigration policy, since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, since September 2019, left the immigration policy of the country in the hands of Marcelo Ebrard.

“It is evident that he neglected his tasks in migration and must resign because the political responsibility for the tragedy in Ciudad Juárez reaches him,” he asserted.

He said that the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, must also resign, because legally, migration policy and the National Institute of Migration are under his responsibility. He estimated that the INM commissioner, Francisco Garduño Yáñez, should also resign immediately to facilitate the investigation. “He is directly responsible for the delays, the austerity and the deterioration in the INM prisons,” he said.

The President of the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the ATAlejandro Moreno, lamented the tragedy in which 40 migrants lost their lives and 28 more were injured, and also urged that responsibilities be established.

Through his social networks, the national leader of the tricolor pointed out that it is necessary to give total clarity to the situation. He said that what happened is unfortunate and, at the same time, he sent his condolences and solidarity to the families of the victims. He argued that the irresponsibility and inefficiency of the Morena government continue to cost lives.

In turn, the leader of the PRD, Jesus ZambranoWe demand that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador clarify what happened and not criminalize migrants as responsible for their own death. “Let’s not forget that they were people under the protection of the Mexican State,” he said.

It should be noted that the Ministry of the Interior reported this Tuesday that it will make available to the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) and the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) the testimonies and various evidence of the public servants of the Ranch Provisional Court of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, to clarify the truth of the facts.

The Segob said that support and assistance have already been offered to the injured, as well as the delivery of a Visitor’s Card for Humanitarian Reasons that guarantees their hospital care.

He also disclosed that the INM It will cover the funeral expenses of the foreign migrants who lost their lives in the conflagration.

As of 2:00 p.m. today, there is a record of 40 deceased migrants and 28 injured; In addition, assistance is provided to 15 foreign women of legal age who were evicted from the Provisional Stay when the fire started in the accommodation area of ​​the immigration headquarters.
