Pregnant Emerald Fennell, Daniel Kaluuya and Anthony Hopkins led the triumphant British winners at the 93rd annual Academy Awards at the Union Station in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.
Emerald, 35, won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman, Daniel, 32, took home the Best Actor In A Supporting Role for Judas And The Black Messiah while Anthony, 83, landed his second Best Actor In A Leading Role for The Father – although he was a no-show and later shared a late acceptance video from Wales.
Anthony’s win marks the star’s second gong after clinching the same award in 1992 for his timeless role as flesh-eating serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence Of The Lambs while Emerald’s win marked the first time a woman has won the award in 13 years.
Chadwick Boseman, the posthumous nominee for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, was considered the favourite to win at the awards event on Sunday night.

To make matters more surprising, Anthony was not even present at the awards show, held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, California, when the trophy was presented by last year’s winner Joaquin Phoenix.
It comes after the actor became the oldest man in history to be awarded Best Leading Actor at the 2021 British Academy Film Awards earlier this month although he was again a no-show as he failed to appear at the virtual ceremony and later revealed he had been working on a painting in his hotel room in Wales.
After his no-show win on Sunday night, the award-winning actor shared a late acceptance video on Monday morning from Wales as he admitted that he ‘really did not expect’ his win.
Speaking in a short clip surrounding by sprawling countryside, Anthony said: ‘Good morning, here I am in my homeland of Wales and at 83-years-of-age I did not expect to get this award. I really didn’t.

‘I am grateful to the Academy and thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman who was taken from us far too early, and again, thank you all very much. I really did not expect this, so I feel very privileged and honoured. Thank you.’
Anthony once again made history on Sunday night as he became the oldest-ever star to win an Oscar for acting at the star-studded annual event.
That record was previously held by the late Christopher Plummer, who won his Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for 2011’s Beginners.
In The Father, Hopkins portrays an ageing man who refuses assistance from his daughter as he begins to lose his own agency.

The film was nominated for a total of six awards on Sunday, also nabbing the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar which went to Christopher Hampton and the film’s co-writer and director, Florian Zeller.
Hopkins is no stranger to creating buzz on Oscars night, as his victory for Jonathan Demme’s Best Picture winner The Silence Of The Lambs in 1992 created a bit of controversy as well.
His performance as Lecter, opposite Jodie Foster‘s Oscar-winning role as Clarice Starling, enjoys not even a half hour of screen time in the film.
At 24 minutes and 52 seconds, Hopkins’ performance trails just one other – David Niven’s role in 1958’s Separate Tables – as the shortest to win an Oscar.
Incredible: Emerald later picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, becoming the first woman to win the award in 13 years
Humorous: She said: ‘They said write a speech and I didn’t because I didn’t think this would happen, I’m going to be in trouble with Stephen Soderbergh, I’m so sorry…’
Elsewhere during the event, Emerald debuted her baby bump as she walked the red carpet before later winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman.
The actress looked radiant in a green and pink billowing Gucci gown as she attended the socially-distanced ceremony.
Emerald is expecting her second child with partner Chris Vernon, which comes after she directed her acclaimed film while she was seven months pregnant with her first child, and gave birth just weeks after production wrapped in 2019.
Emerald later picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, becoming the first woman to win the award in 13 years.
So funny: She added: ‘The only speech I ever wrote was when I was 10 – it mainly thanks Morris from ‘Saved by the Bell’. Unfortunately he hasn’t been as much of my life as I’d hoped. I’m trying very hard not to cry, which is very difficult because as an English person, we don’t cry ever.’
Praised: Promising Young Woman stars Carey Mulligan, pictured, and it had landed five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director

She didn’t prepare a speech for the win, and apologised for the ceremony’s director Stephen Soderberg for not being prepared.
She said: ‘They said write a speech and I didn’t because I didn’t think this would happen, I’m going to be in trouble with Stephen Soderbergh, I’m so sorry…

The film star went on to thank her loved ones, while adding she was ‘mortified’ to be singled out for recognition, she went on: ‘I have so many people to thank, I feel mortified that I’m here when it’s not just my job at all.
Yay! ‘We gotta celebrate, we gotta celebrate life,’ he said as his mother Damalie Namusoke and sister watched his speech from the UK
Hysterical! After the comment, the camera cut to Kaluuya’s family members and his mother was seen looking completely puzzled as she appeared to say ‘what is he talking about?’
‘I want to thank Carey Mulligan for being not only the most talented person in the world but also the kindest and funniest, the producers for never giving up, the cast and the crew, the greatest in the world, they just made me look good and I’m so grateful.’
Becoming emotional, she concluded: ‘Finally, my family, mum, dad, Coco, my husband, Chris… Come on. Our son who did not arrive until a couple of weeks after shooting, thank God, I crossed my legs all the way through. Thank God. Stephen – I hope that was alright.’
Promising Young Woman is a revenge thriller that follows the story of Carey Mulligan’s character Cassie, a barista who feels unfulfilled in her life.
The film has so far had huge success this awards season, bagging two gongs at the WGA awards and a further two at this month’s BAFTA Film Awards.
First-time director Emerald became the first British woman to be nominated for Best Director with her film, Promising Young Woman, last month.
Viral! Unsurprisingly, Damalie’s reaction became an instant viral hit, with Oscars viewers retweeting images of her puzzled response and joking about the awkward family moment

While the film landed five Academy Award nods; Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Director, as well as Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Mulligan, 35.
Meanwhile Daniel left his mother mortified as he made a joke about his parents having sex during his acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor at the 2021 Oscars on Sunday.
The 32-year-old British actor, who won the category for his performance in Judas And The Black Messiah, made the awkward comment as he excitedly declared to the audience at the Union Station in Los Angeles that he was planning to celebrate after the ceremony.
‘We gotta celebrate, we gotta celebrate life,’ he said as his mother Damalie Namusoke and sister watched his speech from the UK.
‘We’re breathing, we’re walking. It’s incredible. Like, my mum, my dad, they had sex – it’s amazing! I’m here. I’m so happy to be alive and I’m gonna celebrate that tonight,’ he added jokingly as the star-studded audience giggled.
Incredible: The ceremony looked amazing at the stunning venue
After the comment, the camera cut to Kaluuya’s family members and his mother was seen looking completely puzzled as she appeared to say ‘what is he talking about?’.
Beside her, the Get Out star’s sister appeared to be embarrassed as she bowed her head in her hands.
Unsurprisingly, Damalie’s reaction became an instant viral hit, with Oscars viewers retweeting images of her puzzled response and joking about the awkward family moment.
As he began his speech, Kaluuya said, ‘I’d like to thank my mum. Thank you so much for pouring into me. You gave me everything, you gave me your factory settings so I could stand at my fullest height.’
The Black Mirror star also thanked his family and friends ‘from London town to Kampala,’ the capital of Uganda where the actor’s father is from.
He also thanked Fred Hampton, the late American activist he plays in his Best Picture-nominated movie, as well as the Black Panthers for their impact on his life.
‘They showed me how to love myself, and with that love, they overflowed to the Black communities and to other communities,’ he said.
‘They showed us that the power of union, the power of unity, that when they play divide and conquer, we play unite and ascend.’
Speaking to reporters backstage after his memorable speech, Kaluuya said his mom is ‘not going to be very happy’ about his joke.
One reporter noted that because of the London-born star’s comments, his speech would live on in infamy.
‘Is that going to live on? I think that’s pretty obvious that all parents have sex, man, you know? What’s going on? It just came out my mouth, I know my mom’s probably going to text me some stuff, but here we are,’ Kaluuya responded.
Asked whether he’d spoken to his mother after the win, Kaluuya said he was taking a break from his phone.
‘No, bro, no, I’m gonna avoid my phone for a bit, mate, trust me, going to avoid my phone for a bit. I think my mum’s not going to be very happy. But she’s gonna be cool, she’s gonna be cool, she’s gonna be cool. She’s got a sense of humour so she’s like we give it to each other, so it’s cool,’ he said.
The 93rd Academy Awards marked the first time Tinseltown’s finest assembled in over a year, for a three-hour show that co-producer Steven Soderbergh described as being ‘like a movie.’
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted the delayed ceremony at the historic Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where socially distanced movie stars went mask-free while on-camera or seated in the main show room.
An official spokesperson called this year’s event ‘an Oscars like none other, while prioritising the public health and safety of all those who will participate.’
